| Pertussis (Whooping Cough) |
| |
|
Message From Dr. Walker, CCC Medical Director June 17, 2010
There recently has been a dramatic increase in cases of pertussis, known as whooping cough, in the Bay Area and statewide. This severe respiratory disease (which includes coughing fits) has already claimed the lives of five infants in other parts of the California so far this year. Fortunately, there have not been any deaths in Contra Costa but we are seeing the disease throughout our county. Children can get pertussis from adults so everyone 65 and under who are around infants should get the Tdap vaccine, even those who were immunized as children need a booster shot.
You can help by doing the following:
- Get Vaccinated. If you work around children under 1 year of age or with parents/family members of children under 1, get vaccinated and encourage co-workers to get vaccinated. Employees can go to their regular health care provider to get Tdap vaccine. Tdap vaccine is also offered at the drop-in clinic at Occupational Health from 8 to 11 a.m. on Fridays - free for Contra Costa Health Plan members (bring the green/blue membership card) or $38 for nonmembers. We are offering coupons for free vaccine at our Public Health Immunization Clinics to the public. Coupons can be downloaded from our website and the clinic locations are online.
- Educate parents, family members and the community about protecting children under 1 year of age by getting the child and everyone around the child vaccinated. Pass out free Tdap coupons and information about pertussis.
The vouchers, printable fact sheets and flyers, and video and audio podcasts in both Spanish and English are available on our website: http://cchealth.org/topics/pertussis/
Information also is available in English and Spanish on our Health Emergency Information Line 1-888-959-9911.

The Family Institute of Richmond wishes to announce that several openings remain in its Family and Adolescent Project, which provides high-quality, comprehensive counseling to uninsured families throughout East, Central, and West Contra Costa County.
We are seeking families desiring 1-4 hours per week of challenging, roll-up-your-sleeves, results-oriented counseling for their at-risk youth aged 8-21 to fill these slots. The services are free to families with no medical insurance. This program also serves families with Medi-Cal, but those slots are currently limited.
Our goal is to collaborate with our youth clients, their families, and area resources to turn lives around. The program offers:
* Individual counseling
* Couples counseling (for parents/guardians)
* Family counseling
* Psychological assessment (as needed)
* School-based advocacy
* Comprehensive case management and collaboration with partner agencies
* Psychiatric assessment and medication management (as needed)
Eligibility
Youth who need intensive, outpatient services are appropriate referrals for this program. General eligibility criteria include:
* Parents or guardians willing to participate in family counseling
* No medical insurance covering psychotherapy
* Youth meets medical necessity (moderate to high moderate impairment in daily functioning)
* Resides in East, Central or West Contra Costa County
* Special consideration given to youth with past or present involvement in, or who may be at immediate risk for entering, the juvenile justice system
Accessibility
We strive to make these services accessible for multi-stressed families. As such, the program offers:
* Office-based and, in some cases, in-home counseling in West, Central, and East County
* Services in evenings and on weekends
* Spanish-speaking counselors
* A diverse group of counselors trained in multicultural issues

| Brookside Community Health Center |
| |
|
Brookside Community Health Center was established in 1994 as a response to studies done by the West Contra Costa Healthcare District which showed a lack of primary health care services for low-income, medically underserved residents in Western Contra Costa County. In 1996, BCHC became a freestanding, independent community health center and established a governing Board of Directors. A few years later, Brookside Community Health Center was awarded federal funding through the Bureau of Primary Health Care’s Community Health Center (PHS 330) program. With this funding, BCHC established a Dental Clinic (1999) and a Perinatal Program (2000), both of which continue to operate today. BCHC began construction on a new site in Richmond in 2003, which opened in June 2004.
In 1994, Brookside Community Health Center had 11,103 primary care visits and a patient population of 5,885 people. Today that number has grown to 49,574 primary care visit for 15,112 patients. The population BCHC serves was then, as it is today, ethnically and racially diverse, almost entirely low-income, with limited or no health care insurance and across the age spectrum.
BCHC is also a founding member of Community Clinic Consortium of Contra Costa, started in 2001, and has participated in the Diabetes Health Disparities Collaborative since 2002.
